Abora Scholarship Fund

Overview

The Abora Scholarship Fund exists to make sure a student's education ends because it's finished — not because the fees ran out. Tuition, books, and boarding support are placed directly behind capable students across Abora's towns and villages, at exactly the points where a promising education is most likely to be cut short.

It is one of five founding initiatives of the Foundation, launched together under the Omanhen's direct backing, and designed to serve every ward of the Abora Asebu Kwamankese District without exception.

The Need

Across Abora's towns and villages, capable students face real dropout risk at two predictable points in their education:

  • The transition from Junior High School (JHS) to Senior High School (SHS), where new fees and boarding costs appear all at once

  • The step into tertiary education, where tuition and living costs are often well beyond what a family can absorb alone

  • Ongoing costs — uniforms, textbooks, boarding fees — that accumulate term by term even for students already enrolled

None of this reflects a shortage of ability. It reflects a gap between a student's potential and a family's finances — a gap this Fund exists to close.

Our Approach

The Fund works in four phases, each designed to follow a scholar from selection through to graduation:

1. APPLICATION & SELECTION

Awards are need- and merit-based, at JHS, SHS, and tertiary level, with clear priority given to students from Abora's 228 towns and villages.

2. AWARD & DISBURSEMENT

Tuition, books, uniforms, and boarding costs are covered directly, on a termly or annual basis depending on the level of study.

3. MENTORSHIP

Scholars are not simply funded and left alone — the Foundation stays in touch, offering guidance and support alongside the financial award.

4. PROGRESS TRACKING & RENEWAL

Each scholar's progress is tracked from award through graduation, with renewal tied to continued enrolment and effort rather than a one-time payment.

What Success Looks Like

The Fund is in its founding phase. Rather than promise numbers it cannot yet guarantee, the Foundation is working toward the following goals in its first year:

  • An application and selection process established ahead of the first academic year

  • A first cohort of scholars identified across JHS, SHS, and tertiary level

  • A first term of fees, books, and boarding costs disbursed to that cohort

  • Mentorship check-ins begun with the Fund's first scholars

Governance & Accountability

The Abora Scholarship Fund operates under the same founding-phase principles as every Abora Foundation program: it answers to the Omanhen of Abora State, it is rolled out based on direct community consultation, and funds given to this initiative are tracked separately from the Foundation's other programs.

Because this is a founding-phase initiative, early partners are not simply funding a fixed plan — they are helping shape how it is rolled out.
